Well, All of us have in mind "our career development and progress", we are usually concerned about; where I'm in my career growth right now? Where do I want to be? I’m not sure about my career path! What are my options? What are the available opportunities? What do I typically enjoy doing? Regularly asking these questions and delving into the answers, building up the way on different forces and variables can lead you to the possible career path options. For instants; being aware of your current set of skills, identifying the requirements of the next level in your career, being able to point out the skills gap and opportunities for your development, having self-awareness, and understanding of where you are heading. This discovery phase isn’t simple, yet it holds promising outcomes, here are a few steps you can use to keep your thoughts in check:

  1. Gather facts about the next step in your career

  2. Analyze your skills, learnings, accomplishments, and contributions so far

  3. Do a fact-check for the required technical knowledge, and soft skills for the next step in your career growth; going up on the ladder means you reach a mastery level in a particular set of skills

  4. Establish the baseline of your career goals

  5. Be mentally prepared, ask yourself, "Am I ready for taking on more responsibilities?". Life has proven that growing up is a trap; growing in your career won't be different! yet you may enjoy it:)

  6. Don't accept every promotion in the way; it might deviate you from your career path or if you are lucky it might introduce you to unforeseen opportunities ✨. Slow down and think 💭

  7. Don’t be limited to the traditional growth career ladder, you don’t have to manage people to grow, you can be a great expert individual contributor

  8. Consider a dual career path, you may then consider a career portfolio

  9. Align with your manager

  10. Be open to change

Know you company goals and create a balance Aligning the career goals with the company's goals is a win-win situation and a massive investment from both sides. It's impossible for any company to grow without setting goals. At the same time, it’s difficult for employees to progress in their careers with misaligned personal goals. Most companies today are talent-friendly, they support learning and development for employees with true initiatives and resilience. In these companies the career path conversations have been adopted as part of the company's people strategy. If you are lucky to be in one of those companies, you should step in to create a balance between your personal goals and the company goals. This because we are generally more engaged when we believe that our employer is concerned about our growth and provides paths to reach individual career goals while fulfilling the company's mission. Take ownership of your career path, keep learning, have time to pause, and reflect, make educatable choices, and start talking about your career path.
